Operational activity

As at 16 October 2024, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (the Commission):

  • is conducting 31 preliminary investigations 
  • is conducting 29 corruption investigations, including 6 joint investigations
  • is overseeing or monitoring 19 investigations by other agencies. 
  • has 6 matters before the court
  • has 501 referrals pending assessment.

Over the period from 1 July 2024 to midnight Sunday 13 October 2024, the Commission:

  • received 694 referrals
  • excluded 562 referrals at triage stage

National Regulators Community of Practice panel on integrity 

On Tuesday 15 October, National Anti-Corruption Commissioner, the Hon Paul Brereton AM RFD SC participated in a panel discussion in Sydney, co-hosted by the National Regulators Community of Practice and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. Facilitated by Australian Information Commissioner Ms Liz Tydd, the panel also included Commonwealth Ombudsman Mr Iain Anderson, and integrity expert Professor AJ Brown AM of Griffith University. 

The panel discussed the current integrity landscape. The Commissioner identified the main areas in which we were seeing reports of corrupt conduct in the Commonwealth public sector as involving procurement, recruitment and promotion, and the public/private interface.

The panel also discussed the use of technology and data to assess risks and inform approaches to our work. The Commissioner outlined our strategic priorities:

  • corruption in complex procurements
  • corruption at the Australian border
  • corruption in senior public official decision-making
  • corruption involving contractors and consultants
  • corruption affecting the environmental sector
  • corruption affecting vulnerable people.
